- On a visit to Tokyo, Joe Biden replied in the affirmative to a journalist who asked him if the United States would intervene militarily in the event of an attack on Taiwan by China, even if it seemed to change his mind the next day.
Does his initial statement represent a break?

This was a clean, no-frills confirmation of fairly strong statements that have already been made.
Joe Biden had already been asked about the scope of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, and had then put Japan, Korea and Taiwan on the same footing in his response.
The issue here is one of US “military involvement,” not just indirect support.
This is a degree of intervention that would go beyond what is currently granted to Ukraine.
