One person has been arrested by police officers responding to a shooting alert at an elementary school in Uvalde, a Texas city of 15,000 people 85 miles west of San Antonio.
It is currently unknown if there were any injuries.
The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District reported a shooter at 1:17 p.m. (local time) at the elementary school, which has about 600 students.
Police reported his Facebook page shortly after the suspect's arrest.
Previously, the district had indicated that all schools in the area had been closed due to gunfire in the area.
The school district said the city's civic center will be used as a reunification center and parents will be able to pick up their children there once the students are accounted for.
