Goats and donkeys as landscapers: On Saturday there was an excursion to the grazing project on the Isar.

Wackersberg - The goats of organic farmer Kaspar Fischer from Gaißach-Lexen are, so to speak, "employees" at the lower nature conservation authority of the district: The frugal, insatiable four-legged friends are officially commissioned to bite through the unwanted increasing bush cover on the formerly extensive gravel plains of the Isar between Bad Tölz and Fleck and keep areas free.

An excursion on Saturday provided insights into the grazing project.

Due to the construction of the Sylvenstein dam: Valuable habitat for flora and fauna was suffocated

Ever since the Sylvenstein dam was built in the 1950s, there has been no replenishment of debris during floods.

As a result, the Isar continued to deepen.

The former gravel banks are largely overgrown and the original soil structures - ecologically particularly valuable habitat for endangered flora and fauna - have been increasingly suffocated.

In the grazing project that has been running since 2015, goats and donkeys are intended to stop and reverse this development as landscape conservationists on selected, fenced-in areas.

Isar Valley Association and district are responsible for the pasture projects

Joachim Kaschek, project manager at the Lower Nature Conservation Authority, explained the background on Saturday.

A sub-area of several hectares on the western bank of the Isar near Bocksleiten was inspected.

The district and the Isar Valley Association are responsible for all grazing projects on state land on the upper Isar.

The inspected area is managed by Maschinenring Wolfratshausen and its project manager Markus Henning.

With the support of the Weilheim Water Management Office, he is also responsible for fencing in the area using electric fences.

Diversity should be improved: small ecosystems benefit

In the state-funded project period from 2015 to 2020, six such paddocks with a total area of 48 hectares were created on the upper Isar between Bad Tölz and Vorderriss.

In the course of grazing, not only is the previously open landscape to be restored in parts, but diversity is also to be improved: Small ecosystems – for example nutrient-poor grasslands rich in species and flowers – that would otherwise be shaded by trees and shrubs will also benefit from this grazing would disappear.

And in turn, the continued existence of numerous endangered animal species depends on such biotopes.

Project is accompanied by scientific monitoring

"Even after the end of the funded project, the district will ensure that grazing on the Alpine river continues," emphasized Kaschek.

In addition, the project will be accompanied by scientific monitoring in order to be able to evaluate the success – i.e. the ecological benefit – of the measures taken.
