The Working Group on Infected Air Changes in Restaurant Clusters Inspects to urge compliance to ensure fresh air supply

A number of restaurant-related infection clusters have recently emerged in Hong Kong, including Sing Yuet Building in Sheung Wan. The Working Group on Ventilation Rate or Air Purification Equipment for Dining Premises, together with representatives from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, visited the site yesterday (23rd) evening.

Professor Yuen Pak Leung, chairman of the working group, said that the working group strongly encourages persons in charge of catering premises to actively review the ventilation systems of their restaurants to ensure that they are functioning properly, that there is sufficient fresh air supply and that they can cover all places evenly.

If necessary, professional assistance (including registered specialist contractors (Ventilation System Works category) (Ventilation Contractors)) should be sought.

He went on to say that the working group would like to take this opportunity to remind the responsible persons of all catering establishments to continue to maintain and repair the fresh air supply system approved by the restaurant license, and to open and operate the system when the premises are open for business. The system for the normal operation of the outdoor air supply to comply with the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance (Cap. 132) The ventilation system for licensed premises shall be such that every person accommodated in the premises shall be supplied with outdoor air and the quantity shall be not less than At 17 cubic meters per person per hour.

The person in charge of the premises shall also comply with the ventilation rate and/or air purification equipment registered by him under the direction of Cap. 599F, and shall turn on and operate the ventilation system and air purification equipment (if installed) when the premises are open for business, and shall Periodically and properly maintain and repair these systems and equipment.

Even if air purification equipment is installed, the person in charge of the catering premises must keep the fresh air supply system on and running at all times.

The CHP pointed out that the FEHD guidelines have made recommendations on hygiene and ventilation, etc. The government will also conduct inspections from time to time to check whether the guidelines need to be updated.
