Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlot Chavushulu said today (Tuesday) that Turkish support for the Palestinians will not weaken even if relations with Israel heat up.
"Our support for the Palestinian struggle is completely disconnected from our relations with Israel," Chabushulu told reporters.
Chabushulu began a two-day visit to the territories and Israel today.
This is the first visit by a senior Turkish official in more than a decade.
During his visit, he met with his Palestinian counterpart Riyad al-Maliki in Ramallah and the two talked, among other things, about the clashes on the Temple Mount which, according to Chabushulu, "are very disturbing to Turkey."
During the meeting, the two signed nine agreements for cooperation between the two countries, and in light of this, the Palestinian Foreign Minister called the visit "historic."
He added that "what we heard at the meeting strengthens our position and what we are doing to achieve freedom and independence."

Chabushulu later also met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
At the meeting, Abbas praised Turkey's support for the Palestinian people and their just rights.
"The state of Palestine is eager to meet its obligations in accordance with international legitimacy and is working to create a political horizon that will end the occupation and achieve independence in East Jerusalem," Abbas said.
Tomorrow, Chabushulu is expected to meet with Foreign Minister Yair Lapid and Tourism Minister Yoel Rezbozov.
In addition, he is also scheduled to visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
