A new sub-variant of the corona virus omicron strain that has the ability to spread faster than previous strains has become the dominant strain in new infections in the U.S., U.S. authorities said Tuesday.
The arrival of a new sub-variant of the Omicron, which received the BA.2.12.1 mark was expected, and according to various estimates it already accounts for 60% of new infection cases across the US, which sees a relative jump in infection rate in recent weeks, and last weekend the number was almost 100,000 new cases daily on average.
This is actually back to the pace of February, and the jump is felt in almost all 50 states of the US. The number of people hospitalized with the general corona virus (in all its strains) across the US has also jumped recently: a jump of about 28 percent compared to two weeks ago
As mentioned the new sub-strain is spreading faster than the previous sub-variants of the omicron, including the one that was responsible for the severe omicron wave last winter and is actually a refinement of the BA.2 variant.
