The Hama Agriculture Directorate has allocated an area of 4468 hectares for cultivation of summer vegetable crops, of which 693 hectares are for the tomato crop, as part of its agricultural plan for the current season.
Engineer Laila Azzouz, head of the Planning and International Cooperation Department, said in a statement to SANA that the cultivation of summer vegetables receives great attention from the farmers of the governorate due to its short production cycle, availability of irrigation water and the presence of remunerative marketing prices in the local market, indicating that
A large percentage of the land under the supervision of the Hama Agriculture Directorate is suitable for growing most types of summer crops.
Azzouz indicated that the summer vegetables that are widely cultivated in the governorate mainly include the crops of eggplant, tomatoes, beans, peppers, okra and cucumbers, and are grown in Masyaf and Mhardeh areas and the lands surrounding the city of Hama.
For their part, a number of farmers demanded the necessity of securing the fuel necessary for watering summer vegetable crops this season, in addition to increasing the period of electrical feeding of wells, especially those near the city center, and allowing the export of some crops in proportion to the high production costs, especially fuel, labor and transport wages.
