With the 9-euro ticket for public transport, the federal government wants to relieve commuters in June, July and August.

But holidaymakers also benefit from the ticket.

Travel throughout Germany for just nine euros – train travel in the Federal Republic should be more attractive than ever this summer.

What is actually a measure to relieve commuters also benefits travellers: In its 2022 relief package, the federal government decided that a

monthly ticket for trips on public transport throughout Germany

should only cost 9 euros - in

June, July and August

.

In total, it would be 27 euros for the entire campaign period.

If you do it cleverly, you can also use the 9-euro ticket as a ticket for your next holiday trip.

9-euro ticket in Germany: how it works

The 9-euro ticket has been available from ticket machines, at the counter, via the bahn.de

website and via the DB app

since May 23 .

It can be bought by anyone over the age of six.

Foreign travelers traveling in Germany can also use the 9-euro ticket.

In order to have as much of the ticket as possible, it is

best to buy it before the first day of validity, i.e. before the 1st of the month

- the ticket is linked to the month.

For example, if it is not purchased until June 15th, it is still only valid until June 30th.

A new ticket must then be purchased for July.

Can I also use the 9-euro ticket for long-distance transport?

With the ICE in four hours from Munich to Berlin - and that only for nine euros?

Unfortunately, that remains a dream.

Long-distance traffic is excluded from the 9-euro ticket

.

Long-distance trains include IC, ICE and EC as well as long-distance buses.

The ticket can be used on all means of local public transport, including buses, trams, subways, suburban trains and regional trains.

In order to travel to more distant destinations in Germany with the 9-euro ticket, you have to plan more time for the journey.

What applies to customers who have an annual or monthly subscription or DB season ticket for local transport?

According to Deutsche Bahn, anyone who has an annual or monthly subscription does not have to be active.

Those affected are automatically informed by their transport association or provider.

Although it has not yet been finally clarified how the 9-euro ticket will be offset against the costs of a subscription, it will probably be a matter of a

refund, a credit or a reduction in the direct debit

.

This does not apply to long-distance season ticket subscribers or long-distance BahnCard100 subscribers.

Can I also travel in 1st class with the 9-euro ticket?

no

The 9 euro ticket is only valid for 2nd class.

For 1st class passengers have to pay the regular price.

Can children ride for free?

Children under the age of six travel for free.

However , children and young people between the ages of six and 14

cannot be taken along free of charge; they need

their own 9-euro ticket

.

The situation is different for those who have a subscription ticket that entitles them to take another person with them.

Customers can continue to use this advantage during the period of validity despite credit or reimbursement - but only for the tariff area provided for in the subscription.

This means that taking people with you is not extended to the entire Federal Republic.

Can bicycles be taken along free of charge?

Would you like to use the opportunity of a cheap train ticket to take your bike on a short excursion?

You have to be careful here:

the 9-euro ticket does not include taking your bike

with you .

As with taking people with you, customers with a subscription ticket that allows you to take a bicycle with you can continue to take one with you within their agreed tariff area - but not beyond.

The railway also warns that the trains get very crowded from June to August.

It is therefore not possible to guarantee that you will be able to take your bike with you.
