In autumn, the BMW Group will open its competence center for battery cell production in Parsdorf.

The company has now announced this.

Parsdorf

– With the completion of the immission control approval process, the prerequisites for the commissioning of the so-called Cell Manufacturing Competence Center, CMCC, a near-series production for lithium-ion battery cells in Parsdorf, are in place, the carmaker said on Monday, May 23 .

BMW in Parsdorf near Munich: Own battery cell production in large series not planned

The BMW Group will demonstrate the industrialization of future generations of high-performance battery cells there over an area of around 15,000 square meters.

The pilot line in the competence center makes it possible to fully analyze and understand the cell's value-added processes.

This helps to enable future suppliers in cell production according to their own specifications and thus further optimize the production of battery cells in terms of quality, performance and costs.

The company is currently ruling out large-scale battery cell production.

Markus Fallböhmer, head of engine and e-drive production at the BMW Group, says: “In Parsdorf we are taking the next logical step in order to penetrate the entire value-added process for battery cells in depth.

After the successful implementation of the battery cell competence center, BCCC, we are now focusing on the production processes.

We ensure the manufacturability of lithium-ion battery cells from a mass production perspective in terms of quality, efficiency and costs.”

BMW is investing 170 million euros in Parsdorf for the first expansion stage

According to the company, the investments for the first expansion stage of the BMW competence center for battery cell production in Parsdorf amount to around 170 million euros.

Around 80 employees would work at the Parsdorf site.

The Federal Ministry of Economics and the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy supported the project as part of the European funding process IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest).

Due to the complex technology, battery cell production will be commissioned in stages, according to BMW.

Production of the CMCC will start in autumn.

In the first phase of the ramp-up, the systems for electrode production would be installed and run in.

Raw materials such as graphite or nickel oxides for the battery electrodes are dosed and mixed here.

This is followed by the coating of the metal foils and the final compression.

BMW in Parsdorf: Battery cell samples for the next generation of battery technology are produced here

In the second phase, the facilities for the subsequent cell assembly and formation would be installed.

There, the electrodes are processed with the other sub-components into battery cells, formed and checked for quality.

The entire ramp-up process will take around a year.

In the course of the next year, the near-series battery cell production in the competence center will go into regular operation, according to the company.

In Parsdorf, work is being done on innovative production processes and systems that can also be used in series production.

The BMW Group produces battery cell samples there for the next generation of battery technology that will be used in the new class.

With the new class, the company is making a major technological leap in electric drive.

The energy density of the future generation of lithium-ion cells should be significantly increased and the costs of material use and production should be reduced at the same time.

The CMCC will make an important contribution to this.

Consequently, the operation in Parsdorf will be based on regeneratively generated electricity, generated among other things by photovoltaic systems on the roof of the building.
