The chestnut, which is over 40 years old, is actually supposed to be felled.

An on-site visit now shows that a transplant is probably possible.

But there is still a lot to consider.

Bad Tölz – The project to save a chestnut tree on the corner of Bairawieser Straße/Höhenbergweg has won more supporters.

The organizer of the Rose Days, Michaela Dorfmeister, and her husband Frank Dorfmeister have now set up a donation account to enable the tree to be transplanted.

Five-year-old Poldi wants to save chestnut

As reported, the idea of saving the tree, which is probably over 40 years old, goes back to five-year-old Poldi and his father Peter Kreitmeir.

The chestnut was actually supposed to be removed as part of the renovation of Bairawieser Straße.

Instead, the tree could also be moved, said Poldi and his dad and contacted a special company and the town hall.

Dorfmeister associates memories with the chestnut tree

Peter Kreitmeir reports that he received a lot of positive feedback on the Kurier article about it.

A woman reported on Facebook who promised a donation of 1,000 euros.

The Dorfmeister couple also hit it off with Kreitmeir.

"We always collected chestnuts from the tree with our children and grandchildren," says Michaela Dorfmeister, explaining why she supports the tree rescue.

In addition, the tree beautifies the entrance to the town.

And there are only a few chestnut trees left in the city.

"Chestnuts are something very important for children," she says.

She is sure that many girls and boys on the way to the Lebenshilfe kindergarten would enjoy the tree - just like Poldi.

Special donation account for tree rescue

The Dorfmeisters set up a special donation account for the tree rescue, they also support the campaign themselves and vouch for the case that not enough money is raised for the order to be placed.

In addition, an action during the Rose Days is being discussed with the Kreitmeir family.

Transplantation probably cheaper than expected

Kreitmeir also took positive signals from an on-site visit with the specialist company and city officials on Monday.

It turned out that moving the chestnut was cheaper than expected, since it was possible to take it out and replant it ten meters further – on a planned new traffic island – in a single action, without having to store it temporarily.

A concrete offer from the company is not yet available.

Kreitmeir now calculates roughly EUR 6,000 instead of the estimated EUR 9,000.

City wants to participate in transplant - questions are still open

The fact that the city is paying for the transplant is apparently off the table.

Kreitmeir says, citing City Councilor Johannes Gundermann (Greens), that there was no majority in favor of a city council meeting at the weekend.

City hall spokeswoman Birte Otterbach said on request that there was no official vote on this during the exam and that there were no plans to present the topic to the city council.

However, she confirms that the city is willing to contribute to the transplanting to the extent of the costs that would otherwise have been incurred for the felling and replacement of new fruit trees.

"It is not yet clear whether this will be in the form of money or work."

Baum would need 1000 liters of water weekly

All in all, Otterbach dampens the enthusiasm somewhat.

The tree rescue with the help of citizen engagement is a "great action".

But there are still a few things to consider.

The conversation with the specialist company revealed that the transplant "seems to be possible".

Ultimately, however, this still has to be clarified with test drilling in the ground.

And in order for the tree to survive, it has to be watered weekly for two to three years with 1000 liters of water, according to Otterbach.

"It's not yet clear who wants to take over." The city is reaching a limit in view of the 7,000 trees in the city area.
