Thousands of Ukrainians are fleeing the war in their country to Germany.

Sooner or later people will need work here.

Mediation is an immense challenge.

A company from Mammendorf now offers a platform for this.

Mammendorf – "help4help" is the name of Petra Gerum's company.

Since 2018, she and her company have been supporting non-profit organizations in organizational areas.

"Now we are starting a project for Ukrainian refugees," says Gerum.

The 40-year-old and her team have set up a platform on which job-seeking Ukrainians and companies with vacancies can register - initially locally in the Brucker district.

Extension not excluded.

idea older

“I had the basic idea of a platform seven years ago when the first wave of refugees came,” says Gerum, who originally comes from Mittelstetten.

But life initially had other plans for her.

After completing her training at Siemens, she first ended up in Paderborn after holding several positions at the company or its subsidiaries.

There she worked for another company in the management of a sales department and as an authorized signatory.

"Love then took me back to Mammendorf," says Gerum.

Her husband has a craft business here, in which she also works.

At the same time, she wanted to continue working in the area that she got to know and appreciate at Siemens: numbers and contract issues.

That was the initial spark for founding help4help.

action against hunger

Today the company has three permanent employees, plus a few specialists who work on technical questions on an hourly basis.

They all support, among other things, “Action Against Hunger”, a global aid organization.

The Mammendorfers offer help as part of the non-profit GmbH, for example in setting up a donation database, in controlling or with legal questions.

With the stream of refugees from the Ukraine, Gerum then remembered her idea of setting up a platform for job placement for refugees.

Her credo: "Integration also means getting people into work." She then did a little research, says Gerum.

There is the Employment Agency, which also arranges jobs.

"Other than that, I haven't found any low-threshold, simple offers in this direction."

This applies above all to the specific problems and circumstances of many refugees: "Most of them come here, have families or animals with them and are not flexible in terms of location." Even working from home is not so easy to implement, depending on the accommodation.

There were also language barriers.

With her platform, which can be found at www.help4help.de, Gerum wants to bring job seekers and companies together and then continue to support them.

For example, Help4help explains German labor law to the refugees, but can also help with arranging daycare places.

The companies are shown any funding opportunities - for example, if a professional driver's license needs to be extended.

Free for refugees

The platform is free for Ukraine refugees.

It is financed exclusively by donations and the employers, who have to pay a fee.

“But we also want to give something back,” says Gerum.

For this reason, five percent of all proceeds are donated to projects related to aid to Ukraine.

The platform is initially open to job seekers and companies from all sectors in the district.

However, an expansion cannot be ruled out, says Petra Gerum.

"If things go well, we already have the prospect of a position for a fourth permanent employee."
