Feijóo describes as "surprising" the statements of the Vice President of Castilla y León against abortion

The leader of the PP, after promising his position as senator, assumes that he will confront Sánchez on June 7 in the Upper House

Alberto Núñez Feijóo has shown this Wednesday his discomfort with the statements of the Vice President of Castilla y León, Juan García-Gallardo, of Vox, against abortion and offensive with a disabled socialist attorney.

The leader of the PP has avoided condemning them explicitly, justifying himself in that he did not know them in depth, but he has revealed that they have been "surprising" when he heard them from the mouth of a journalist who has asked him about them in the Senate.

The controversial statements of the PP partner in Castilla y León have impacted the Andalusian campaign, where the extreme right intends to repeat the same government formula as in that autonomous community.

At a press conference in the Senate after taking office as senator this morning,

The president of the PP has refused to comment on García-Gallardo's statements, but he has shown signs that he has not liked them, Feijóo style, that is, subtly.

“It will allow me not to comment on the comments of the vice president of an autonomous community.

I'm not going to do it”, he said before specifying: “First, because I don't know the exact scope and content of his statements;

second, because they seem very surprising to me, and third, because it is not the objective of my inauguration as senator”.

The vice president of Castilla y León with the PP has provoked an intense controversy over the content and forms of his responses to the opposition yesterday in the plenary session of the Castilian-Leonese Parliament.

García-Gallardo referred to the laws of abortion and euthanasia as laws of "death" and argued that the left "invites fathers to crush those with disabilities in the wombs of mothers."

In addition, he replied to a disabled socialist prosecutor: "I am not going to treat you with condescension, I am going to do it as if you were a person like all the others and not as her team does."

Feijóo was not opposed at the time to the Government of Castilla y León agreement between the PP and Vox, but he did not like how Alfonso Fernández Mañueco negotiated with the extreme right.

The agreement "has room for improvement", they say in the leader's team, where they consider that Vox achieved a too advantageous pact, with the presidency of the Cortes in exchange for nothing.

The popular leader wanted to distance himself and did not attend Mañueco's inauguration, although at the same time he has supported the pact because it gives "stability" to Castilla y León.

The problem for the PP is that Vox wants to replicate that agreement in Andalusia and is running for the June 19 elections with a strong candidate, Macarena Olona, with whom it expects a good result.

A possible pact with Vox compromises the moderation strategy of Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla and Feijóo;

both seek to expand their electoral base by capturing voters in the center left, once those of Santiago Abascal stop the growth of the PP towards their right.

Hence, the Andalusian president has sent a strong message in the pre-campaign about the possibility of repeating the elections if Vox does not compromise and agrees to support him from outside the Government, in case his support is necessary.

Feijóo, however, has avoided speaking in the same terms about a possible electoral repetition in Andalusia, asked twice about it this Wednesday.

"The objective is to win and for all Andalusians to sleep peacefully after election night", the popular leader has limited himself to answering.

Moreno Bonilla, has defended the head of the conservatives, "is the president of tranquility and calm."

Feijóo has spoken like this from the Senate, after having promised his seat in the Upper House on Wednesday.

The leader of the PP has settled in his new office in the Senate, to which he will attend regularly, according to his team.

After promising - not swearing - his position, he has appeared before the press and then had a coffee with the president of the Chamber, the socialist Ander Gil.

The opposition leader hopes to confront the President of the Government in the next plenary session with a control session in the Senate, scheduled for June 7.

Feijóo has put pressure on Pedro Sánchez to come and debate with him.

“We know through the group's spokesman that on the 7th the president will appear in this Chamber and we will have the opportunity to ask him.

I myself will formulate the question ”, he has expressed.

On the other hand, Feijóo has admitted that he does not have many possibilities of being able to participate in the Debate on the State of the Nation, scheduled for July, because he is not a deputy.

“It is evident that I am a senator, I am not a deputy.

The debates take place in Congress.

And, from what they tell me, my ability to act as leader of the opposition in a Chamber in which I do not hold a deputy certificate is quite compromised.

Unless there is additional information from lawyers or other aspects, there are legal limitations to be able to hold a position and a record that I do not have.

The PP has studied and prepared a report on Feijóo's possibilities of intervening in Congress as a senator, but the leader believes that he has very little room for maneuver and does not intend to force the regulatory margin.
