There is work in the alleys of the zoo!

In Thoiry (Yvelines), seven little coyotes and four arctic wolves have been born in recent weeks.

They thus join two baby bush dogs, three maned wolves and eight arctic foxes a little older than them, who have been frolicking in their enclosures since the beginning of spring.

"These new births are further rewarding the efforts of all the teams for the conservation of endangered species", welcomes the zoo of Thoiry.

Overwhelmed for a few days, the parents of the baby coyotes had arrived in the American reserve, the one where you can also see bears, during the course of last year.

The little ones are just beginning to discover their territory.

This species, which inspired the cult cartoon series "Beep Beep and Coyote" in the 1950s, is native to North America.

Only two zoological parks in France and three in Europe welcome coyotes.

They dug dens to give birth to

The couple of arctic wolves who have just celebrated a happy event took longer to decide.

The father and mother had known each other for two years, but the four babies who had just been born were the first litter of their mother, baptized "Kiana".

As they would in the wild, coyotes and arctic wolves give birth in a den they dug themselves.

“The trainers will only intervene in a few days to catch the little ones in order to determine their sex and chip them, explains the zoo.

If all goes well for them, this is the only time in their lives that they will be approached and touched by man.

Who wants to sleep next to baby wolves?

For more than fifty years, the Thoiry zoo has created mixed enclosures, that is to say spaces where several species live side by side.

In the American reserve, bears, wolves, coyotes and bison therefore live on the same territory, in semi-freedom.

“The advantage is to recreate areas where the animals interact, as in nature, comment the trainers.

The species are of course chosen according to their affinities.

Thanks to its immersive accommodation formula called “Les Tannières”, the Thoiry zoo offers the possibility of spending a night… next to all these babies, in the “American Reserve” area.

An idea for those nostalgic for the 4 a.m. bottle?
