On the occasion of World Bee Day, the Syrian branch of the Arab Beekeepers Union, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform and the United Nations Development Program, honored a number of professors and students of the Faculty of Agriculture at Tishreen University, old and novice beekeepers in Lattakia Governorate, in appreciation of their efforts in the beekeeping sector.

In statements to SANA’s reporter, Engineer Iyad Abboud, head of the Syria branch of the Arab Beekeepers Union, said that World Bee Day is an occasion to remind the role of bees in maintaining environmental security and plant, natural, food and economic balance, indicating that the honor included 3 agricultural engineers from recent graduates, where each of them was granted two beehives and supplies. Production, as part of a strategic project aimed at qualifying new beekeepers in the bee sector from various governorates and encouraging them to enter the labor market.

In turn, Engineer Nawaf Shehadeh, assistant director of Lattakia Agriculture, explained that the directorate provides instructions and advice to beekeepers and some production requirements, provides them with cells and packages at nominal prices, and encourages them to plant aromatic and nectar plants to secure pasture for bees.

Ahmed Fadda, representative of the United Nations Development Program, indicated that the aim of providing support to new beekeepers from university graduates is to support young beekeepers who want to beekeepers to be a nucleus for training new beekeepers within the projects implemented to rehabilitate beekeepers in various governorates.

Dr. Abdullah Hatoum, one of the honored professors and a specialist in beekeeping and honey production, considered that the cells provided to beekeepers constitute a real nucleus for the project of new novice beekeepers in the bee sector.

The honoring included university professors Abdullah Hatoum, Malik Omran, Director of Lattakia Agriculture, Engineer Bassem Doba, and agricultural engineers, Batoul Al-Mahmoud, Abdel Aziz Masa and Aya Ali.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) celebrates World Bee Day on May 20 of each year.
