Oberschleißheim actually wanted to use containers to relieve childcare.

Now the municipality has rejected the interim solution.

Oberschleißheim

– The municipality of Oberschleißheim says goodbye to plans to temporarily care for children in containers.

The exploding construction costs as a result of the Ukraine war on the one hand and the declining need for childcare places on the other prompted most of the parliamentary groups to backtrack.

The decision, which was made in a non-public session, was a huge surprise.

In the previous year, the municipality lost 120 places in kindergarten and crèche.

Mayor Markus Böck (CSU) also expected an influx of at least ten percent of the population, including several hundred children.

Rental costs double

After the standstill period agreed for the special session had expired, the town hall turned to the public these days.

The containers provided on the lawn behind the indoor pool are intended to counteract the predicted childcare crisis as an interim solution.

Starting in autumn this year, the neighboring "Mouse's Nest" will be expanded to include four crèche groups and one kindergarten group.

On the site of the former HPCA kindergarten on Prof.-Otto-Hupp-Straße, a children's home, initially for six groups, is scheduled to open its doors in September 2024.

The system, designed in a modular design, can be expanded at any time.

Mayor Böck calculates with 6.5 million euros, not counting state subsidies.

Somewhat confidently, the way was paved last year to defuse the escalating situation in childcare with containers.

The community lacked childcare places.

The fact that the situation almost reversed itself within a year raises questions in Oberschleißheim.

Especially since the community, with the lack of educators and childcare places that is invoked at every opportunity, does not claim a unique selling point in the district.

Construction costs have exploded not least because of the Ukraine war.

The town hall would have to shell out 1.7 million euros for the containers, they say.

With inflation rising from 20 to 40 euros per square meter rent for the containers, one can assume that construction costs will double.

It is unclear whether this also applies to the children's home on the HPCA site.

From the town hall, however, it can be heard that

"This frees up places in day-care centers."

In addition to the increased construction costs, the surprisingly opposing trend in the childcare sector caused the Schleißheim municipal councils to bury the interim solution.

Since the need for daycare places has fallen, City Hall spokeswoman Doris Rohe assumes “that parts of the container facility would be empty”.

On the other hand, an above-average number of places in day care centers and the like should become free, since one or the other child would have stayed longer in kindergarten due to the pandemic in order to go straight to school afterwards.

It also seems surprising that the need for childcare places, especially for three-year-old children, will decrease from September 2022.

According to city hall spokeswoman Rohe, this is because more educators than expected are returning from parental leave earlier.

In addition, more children than usual start school in autumn.

"This frees up places in day-care centers."
