The author of the shooting that shook the United States on Tuesday, Salvador Ramos, bought two assault rifles on his 18th birthday.

Before heading to Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and opening fire with a pistol and rifle, the young man had shot his grandmother.

The attack has left at least 21 dead, including 19 students, a teacher and the author of the massacre himself, who was shot dead by the police.

Late in the afternoon, after returning from his trip to Asia, President Joe Biden gave a speech to the nation in which, visibly moved, he condemned the massacre and spoke of his weariness with the inaction of Congress in the face of these repeating massacres: “When are we going to confront the

lobby

of weapons?” he asked himself.

So far this year, there have been more than 200 mass shootings in the US Until the one in Uvalde, the deadliest had been in Buffalo, where on May 14 a young white supremacist murdered 10 African Americans in a supermarket.

Sandy Hook, Parkland, Uvalde... : the sinister cadence of mass murders in schools

Although the installation of metal detectors and the adoption of other security measures such as video cameras or the search of backpacks have contributed to the decrease in the number of shootings in educational centers, the massacre that Salvador Ramos perpetrated this Tuesday in an institute Uvalde (Texas), which has left at least 19 children and two adults dead, bears the signature of a tragedy foretold.

Mass shootings have become a sinister cadence in schools, institutes and universities in the United States. Only in the month of last September two were registered, also in the State of Texas, after the total or partial closure of the centers by the pandemic temporarily stopped the bleeding.

On the last day of November, the trend resumed with a deadly attack in Oxford, Michigan,

when a 15-year-old student killed four classmates in high school.

The boy used a weapon that had been legally purchased by his father, and the authorities announced that from then on the parents or guardians would be charged and tried for the criminal actions of the minors in their care.

Gun control, a recurring (and frustrating) debate after every shooting in the US

Mass shootings are such a part of American life that they even have their own rules.

For it to count in the statistics, an event of these characteristics must cause the death of at least four people, not counting the shooter, and that these are not members of the same family.

So far this year, there have been about 200 mass shootings in the country.

Until this Tuesday, the most serious of 2022 had been that of Saturday, May 14 in Buffalo, when an 18-year-old white supremacist named Payton Gendron shot 13 people in a popular supermarket in the eastern city of the State of New York.

He killed 10 people, all African Americans.

That record has taken 10 days to break in the Texas town of Uvalde, where Salvador Ramos, also 18, has murdered at least 19 children, elementary school students, and two adults in a school.

Unlike Gendron, the shooter is dead, authorities have said.

Biden: “When are we going to take on

 the gun

lobby ?”

"When I became president, I hoped I wouldn't have to go through this again."

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, expressed his pain and regret this Tuesday afternoon for the attack on the Robb elementary school, in Uvalde, a town of 16,000 inhabitants of the State of Texas.

An 18-year-old has killed 21 people there, including 19 children and a teacher at the center, according to Texas State Police.

Biden has used his condolences to also send a clear message in favor of greater controls on the sale and use of firearms, pointing to industry lobbyists as responsible for preventing stronger regulation.

“Weapons manufacturers have spent two decades aggressively marketing assault weapons, which are the ones that bring them the most profit,” he said, adding: “For God's sake, when are we going to confront the gun lobby? ?”.

Biden has recalled other similar massacres that he has experienced in the past and has pointed out that 10 years have passed since he went to a school in Newtown (Connecticut) for a similar massacre, when he was vice president of the United States and 20 children were murdered in the school Sandy Hook Elementary.

For God's sake, when are we going to take on the gun lobby?

- So far this year, there have been more than 200 mass shootings in the country.

Until the one in Uvalde, the deadliest had been the one in Buffalo, where on Saturday, May 14, a young white supremacist murdered 10 African-Americans in a supermarket.

The San Francisco team was in Texas to face the Dallas Mavericks in a decisive game for the pass to the NBA finals.

The recording is an example of the tiredness of American society in the face of violence, embodied in a multitude of messages from public figures, starting with President Joe Biden.

That is, "we have to act."

Prosecutor Garland calls to "end this senseless violence"

US Attorney General Merrick Garland has called the massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde "unspeakable."

After recalling that the first response to the attack has corresponded, together with the local police, to the FBI agents and to the personnel of the Agency of Tobacco, Alcohol, Firearms and Explosives (ATF, for its acronym in English), he has assured that "The Department of Justice is committed to offering all support" to enforce the law in Texas and in Uvalde.

"We join our fellow Americans in mourning this terrible loss and in their determination to end this senseless violence," he said.

Biden calls for tougher gun regulations

Joe Biden has called in his speech for tougher regulations on gun ownership, a stance that has been blocked time and time again by Republican lawmakers.

"We know they work and that they have a positive impact," he said.

“Why do we let this continue to happen?

The idea that an 18 year old can walk into a store and buy two assault rifles is just plain wrong.

Why in God's name would he need assault rifles, if not to kill someone?

In addition, the president has assured that a majority of citizens support what he has called "common sense weapons regulations."

Biden was Barack Obama's vice president when the massacre in Aurora, Colorado, took place in 2012, and he was personally in charge of managing the crisis.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has criticized the "empty words" of those who condemn the killings but oppose new gun regulations, referring to Republican politicians.

"It is time for everyone in Congress to listen to the will of the American people and come together to pass life-saving legislation, already passed in the House on a bipartisan basis," she said in a statement.
