Thanks to the bridging day, Germany is expecting a long weekend.

Short vacationers head south and fear long traffic jams - rightly so.

Every information is here.

Munich – On Thursday, May 26th, Germany celebrates Ascension Day – a public holiday – nationwide.

Friday, May 27th is therefore a bridging day.

This means that many employees take this day off to enjoy a long weekend.

And in many cases to use this for a short vacation.

Popular destinations are Austria, Italy, Switzerland or the Czech Republic - neighboring countries of Bavaria.

In Free State, there is therefore a risk of many and, above all, long traffic jams on the motorways.

Ascension Day in Bavaria: Where drivers have to expect the longest waiting times

At the request of

Merkur.de

, the ADAC confirmed: "There is a high risk of traffic jams on all routes to the south".

Means: long traffic jams are to be expected on the A8 to Salzburg, on the A93 in the direction of Kiefersfelden/Kufstein and at the end of the motorway at Eschenlohe.

There is also a high risk of traffic jams at the border crossing near Füssen/Reutte.

Drivers in the vicinity of Nuremberg and Regensburg also have to be prepared for long waiting times.

According to ADAC, there is a high risk of traffic jams on the A3, A6 and A9 in the Nuremberg autobahn area, and the A3 will also be affected in the Regensburg area.

Danger of traffic jams in Bavaria on the weekend of Ascension Day: construction sites and peak times

Construction sites will at least encourage traffic jams.

Alexander Kreipl, spokesman for transport and environmental policy at ADAC, explicitly mentions the Regensburg and Nuremberg areas.

Local construction sites will “take care of the handicaps” here.

But "a construction site in Tyrol on the A13 between Innsbruck Süd and the Schönberg toll booth will also cause traffic jams," says Kreipl.

Already on Wednesday afternoon, May 25th, one of the busiest days of the year can be expected.

The ADAC predicts that many holidaymakers will still be leaving for the long weekend on Thursday.

Sunday is the big day of the journey home, and long traffic jams are to be expected here as well.

If there is also good weather, which it looks like at the moment, many day trippers also cause a massively increased risk of traffic jams.

Ascension Day: This is how drivers prepare themselves for long traffic jams

Before long car journeys where traffic jams are to be expected, it is important to take the right precautions.

The ADAC recommends planning the trip well, considering routes and taking possible obstacles into account.

If possible, conurbations, i.e. the areas around larger cities such as Munich, Nuremberg and Regensburg, should be avoided.

It is important to check the vehicle before setting off, to check the oil, tyres, coolant and windscreen fluid and to pack enough food.

If there are children on board, it helps to think up entertaining games for the trip and the traffic jams beforehand and maybe pack an audio book or two.

Last but not least, it is advisable to look again at the entry requirements for the various countries.

Especially with regard to Corona, there are still countries that require a negative test result when unvaccinated people enter the country.

ID documents should be in every wallet anyway.
