"We are migrants, we are not criminals," shouted thousands of people on Sunday in Tijuana, Mexico, on the border with San Diego in the United States.

You want to apply for asylum in the United States.

They have reasons enough to do so.

Vanessa, migrant: »We have been here in Tijuana for almost a year, five months in an emergency shelter and five more months in a rented apartment.

And it's very difficult.

I hope they let us enter the United States.

It's very dangerous here in Tijuana."

Vanessa and the other migrant women are demonstrating against Title 42, a regulation that the Trump administration passed in March 2020 and which is still in effect.

According to this, border officials can turn migrants away without reason, citing the pandemic and the health protection of the US population - even before they can apply for asylum.

Edward, Migrant: For many of us, Title 42 is the end of our dream.

Being granted asylum is the dream of every immigrant, it is a fundamental right.

And Title 42 takes that right away from us.”

US President Joe Biden promised during the election campaign that he wanted to have the regulation lifted as soon as possible.

But on Monday, a federal judge in Republican-ruled Louisiana ruled that Title 42 should remain in effect for the time being.

For southern states, the costs would be too high due to the large number of migrants.

The Biden government has announced an objection.

Hundreds of thousands of people are now stuck at the border, with hundreds trying to enter the United States illegally every day.
