A real rain of money poured out of a skyscraper in Mainz on Monday – and caused many walkers.

The police are looking for the owner of the banknotes - so far in vain.

Mainz – The police in Rhineland-Palatinate are looking for the owner of banknotes worth around 50,000 euros.

These fluttered out of a high-rise building in the Lerchenberg district of Mainz on Monday.

As the police announced on Tuesday, several residents of the high-rise complex reported the "extraordinary storm" on Monday afternoon.

Mainz residents hand over a five-digit amount to the police

According to a report by the SWR, the officials found on site that "a striking number of walkers were out and about" - probably to look for banknotes.

The residents would have collected a five-digit amount during the day and handed it over to the police.

Police sniffer dog "Nacho", which was used to detect any hidden notes in the bushes, could not find any more money.

The police are asking other finders to also hand in any money they find – to them or to the lost-and-found office.

There is a legally regulated finder's fee for this.

A spokeswoman stressed that pocketing the banknotes is not allowed.

It is a case of embezzlement, which could lead to a fine or even imprisonment.

Mainz: Police are looking for the owner of the 50,000 euros

The owner of the large sum of money is still unknown.

Because no one reported on Tuesday, the money was handed over to the lost and found office of the city of Mainz on Wednesday.

The rightful owner can collect the money upon presentation of appropriate proof.

According to the police, it was unclear from which building in the high-rise settlement the rain of money came and why the banknotes had flown out of the house.

"The suspicions range from money sewn into a pillow that accidentally fell out when knocked out, to money derived from a crime," it said.
