Children in Obertshausen (Offenbach district) play basketball every day.

Residents complain and want their peace back.

Obertshausen – bang, bang, bang.

The noise that the basketball makes when it hits the ground is what Joachim Sattler from Obertshausen says he hears every day.

A basketball court was installed in February on the former fairground on Vogelsbergstrasse next to the family center.

Two baskets and a soccer goal are now there.

Sattler is a resident and sees his peace disturbed by it: "We have lived in Obertshausen for 36 years and have also lived quietly, unfortunately that is over now," Sattler turns to our newspaper.

At the end of school around noon, the balls would start flying.

The neighbor's car had already been damaged and balls had been taken from the neighboring property without asking.

There is no rest at the weekend either, sometimes until late in the evening.

He has nothing against children and young people playing, "but why is a square being built in a residential area," Sattler asks, as reported by op-online.de.

Obertshausen family center (Offenbach district): The basketball court should not go away

When asked, Mayor Manuel Friedrich says that the youth area was set up in the north-east corner of the square following a decision by the city council.

When the family center was built, it was decided that the basketball court that had to go there should be rebuilt in the immediate vicinity.

Exactly where he is now.

Sattler would like it to be relocated.

If the baskets were in the front area of the fairground, i.e. closer to the street and not directly in front of private property, he would be completely satisfied, says the pensioner.

A safety fence - for example L-shaped around the baskets - should limit the field, so Sattler's idea.

“In the direction of the family center, a retirement home borders.

Nobody there is disturbed by the noise.

And on the other side of the street is the day care center, so there is no one there who could be annoyed by the game in the afternoon," argues Sattler.

Trouble about the basketball court in Obertshausen: the city brings arguments against relocation

A corresponding new decision is necessary for a transfer, says First City Councilor Michael Möser.

This would have to be obtained.

During an on-site visit by the magistrate with the residents, however, the opinion was reached that the place should be retained for the time being.

Möser: "Relocating in the direction of the street would mean costs in the six-digit range."

In the vicinity of busy roads, there are exact templates for the height of protective fences.

That is a reason against the transfer.

Another is that the decision of the city council also states that use as a fairground should remain possible.

That is why fixed game elements were only installed at the edge of the square.

City relies on several measures: Ball catch protection in Obertshausen (Offenbach district)

In order to improve the situation for the residents, the city is taking two measures: A protective ball fence should catch the balls so that they no longer land on the property.

In order to ensure that the times of use of the site are observed in the evening hours - it must be quiet after 9 p.m. - a security service is to be deployed, which is also to be on duty from June to September on weekends and in the evenings until late at night.

Möser emphasizes that this security service will keep an eye on all playgrounds and football fields where there are known cases of disturbances.

Friedrich is confident that the measure will be successful: "In Neu-Isenburg or Dreieich, for example, the security service has improved." (Theresa Ricke)

Only recently, the noise of an air conditioner caused trouble in Offenbach and robbed residents of their sleep.
