The G7 are probably discussing an explosive proposal: Russian oligarchs want to give the West billions.

And so come off the sanctions lists.

Bonn - The reconstruction of Ukraine as a result of the invasion by Russia will cost between 200 and 500 billion euros.

This is the result of an estimate by the CEPR think tank.

The money from Russian oligarchs could help here - at least if some of them have their way.

Because the Russian billionaires themselves apparently made this proposal.

This is reported by the

Handelsblatt

.

The G7 should already be discussing the idea.

Ukraine reconstruction with oligarch funds?

Explosive report on G7 thoughts

According to the report, Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland informed other ministers at the last G7 meeting last week that she had been approached by several Russian oligarchs.

These are currently on sanctions lists - their assets are largely frozen.

In addition, according to their own statements, the oligarchs themselves do not agree with the Russian war of aggression in the Ukraine conflict.

However, one cannot distance oneself from Putin's policy, as otherwise there would be severe consequences in Russia.

Recently, even several oligarchs had died mysteriously.

That's why the oligarchs proposed a deal to Freeland: They want to buy their way out of the sanctions by paying billions.

Accordingly, the oligarchs would transfer large parts of their billions of assets to the West if they were removed from the sanctions lists.

These funds could then flow into the reconstruction of Ukraine, the report says.

Rebuilding Ukraine with Oligarch Money: A Win-Win-Win Situation

It would be a win-win-win situation: the oligarchs can indulge in their lives of luxury again, Kyiv gets money for reconstruction and the West can save itself a discussion about expropriations.

It is precisely this debate that is increasingly flaring up.

At the beginning of May, Charles Michel, President of the European Council, said: "I firmly believe that it is extremely important not only to freeze assets, but also to confiscate them in order to make them available for the reconstruction of the country". .

And EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently said at the World Economic Forum that "if possible, Russian assets (...) that we have frozen" must also be used for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

According to the Handelsblatt

report

, Freeman made no official proposal to her G7 colleagues at the meeting - only reported on the calls from the oligarchs.

Nevertheless, the ministers should now think about the idea.
