From Columbine to Sandy Hook, schools have been the scene of some of the largest massacres in the United States in recent history.

On Tuesday, a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, left at least 18 students and two adults dead.

The attacker was an 18-year-old man from Uvalde, Gov. Greg Abbott said, and he died.

School district police say he acted alone.

Episodes of violence in schools have marked the history of recent decades.

These were the deadliest.

Sandy Hook

This year marks a decade since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, in which six adults and 20 children were killed on December 14, 2012.

That day, 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed his 52-year-old mother, Nancy, and then drove her car to the school, about 5 miles away, with about 700 students.

Lanza made his way by shooting at the entrance to the entrance of the school, entered and shot some officials who came out to see what was happening.

He then went into two rooms and went on to slaughter him.

In one of them he committed suicide, ending a massacre that lasted less than 11 minutes.

Agents lead a line of children who left the school after the shooting.

Parkland

On Valentine's Day 2018, Nikolas Cruz entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 students and faculty members and injuring 17 others.

According to law enforcement, he pulled the fire alarm to lure people outside and increase the death toll.

He was a former student who had been expelled from the institute for disciplinary reasons.

Another of the shootings that has been etched in the memory of the United States is that of Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.

Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, kill 12 classmates and a teacher before committing suicide in the school library.

The couple had recorded home videos before the attack in which they made reference to what they were going to do and apologized to their parents for it.

Columbine High School students run under police protection on April 20, 1999.
