Getting a place in a swimming course is currently a matter of luck.

Even in the Tegernsee valley, the rescue organizations cannot cover the demand.

The swimming season at Tegernsee will soon begin.

But the number of children who cannot swim yet should be particularly high after two years of Corona.

The demand for swimming courses is huge - and even in the Tegernsee valley it cannot be met by a long shot.

Tegernseer Tal - Florian Mengele is very concerned that the children continue to learn how to swim properly.

"If you live by a lake, that's essential - almost vital," says the technical manager of the DLRG Tegernsee.

His local association will therefore try again in midsummer to organize some swimming courses for beginners.

They should preferably be distributed across the district - "we want to make it as low-threshold as possible," says Mengele.

Easier said than done.

Since the bathing park in Bad Wiessee closed its doors, the rescue organizations have had a glaring lack of course and training opportunities.

They depend on getting hold of times in Batusa in Holzkirchen or in the Tölzer indoor pool.

In individual cases, they may also use the indoor pools of hotels.

The Rottacher Seebad and Warmbad pools are now also available for the training of your own offspring - in summer.

Swimming courses at Tegernsee: "First come, first served"

That's not enough.

The rescue organizations such as the water rescue service and the DLRG are expecting a large rush to the swimming courses this year.

"The demand was huge last year," reports Mengele.

The following applies to the courses: first come, first served.

Caroline Amann from the DLRG Gmund also believes that the demand will not be able to be met by far.

Added to the problem of the lack of swimming pools is that of volunteers, whose number and opportunities are also limited.

"It's a bit of action," says Amann about the organization of the beginners' swimming courses, which are also planned for the summer.

DLRG Gmund trains in Bad Tölz

In the meantime, the local association has secured training for its own offspring.

Since the autumn of last year, the Gmunder DLRG has been allowed to complete training units with its children and young people in the Tölz indoor pool.

Popular sport is also covered here.

From the seahorse to the following swimming badges, the DLRG youngsters can develop their skills, as Amann reports.

In Warmbad Rottach-Egern, too, the municipality has made training times available again.

"That's really generous," says the DLRG spokeswoman.

In her eyes, too, it is "goal number one" for the children in the region to learn to swim safely.

So far, Amann knows from the security services in Kaltenbrunn, only a few people have romped about in the 13-degree cold water of Lake Tegernsee.

But soon it will be teeming with swimmers and water sports enthusiasts again - and a fall from the SUP board or even from the air mattress then quickly happened.

In addition to the DLRG, the local water rescue groups around the lake will also be required again in the summer.

Their main focus is on "getting their own youth fit," as the district chairman of the water rescue services, Alexander Schwarz, explains.

He also names the lack of indoor pools as the "main problem" - with the beginner swimming courses you automatically reach the limits.

Swimming courses for children from Bad Wiessee: Hoping for the offer from hoteliers

The Bad Wiessee water rescue service still wants to make an effort to continue holding its usual swimming courses in cooperation with the local kindergarten.

"The demand there is extreme," says Chairman Thomas Mielke.

Two years of the pandemic are likely to have made the waiting lists even longer.

For this reason, the local group offered two courses for young swimmers from kindergarten and primary school last autumn/winter, despite the corona restrictions.

At that time, the water rescue service was very lucky with the location: a Wiesse hotelier had provided his swimming pool.

Mielke hopes that there will be such an offer this autumn as well, so that a kindergarten course can take place again in October.

Silvana Wetzel can also sing a song about the great rush to the swimming courses.

With her Oberland swimming school in Bad Tölz, Wetzel, who is also a member of the Rottach water rescue service, is currently giving beginner courses in the Warmbad in Rottach-Egern.

The courses are all fully booked and demand is high.

In August, she will therefore offer an additional appointment together with a colleague from the water rescue service.

How often does she currently stand at the edge of the pool?

"Every day except weekends," says Wetzel.
