In a statement to SANA, a member of the faculty's teaching staff, Dr. Jalal Fandy, who specializes in medicinal plants and the environment, indicated that the college had submitted more than one doctoral thesis in this field that proved the medical use of the Damascene rose, and a number of researches were published in international and local journals and scientific publications, pointing out that the Department of Pharmaceuticals in The college is currently preparing a national directory of medicinal plants in Syria, the first of its kind, and the Damascene rose came in it as one of the most important medical and economic types spread and used in Syria.

Dr. Fendi pointed out that the college also conducts the necessary tests to assess the quality of some products of the Damascene Rose that are available in the local markets or intended for export by analyzing samples sent from the producers and manufacturers within the professional work unit in the college, considering that this evaluation contributes to correcting the work of these companies and determining The degree of quality in its products, which is reflected positively on raising the quality and marketing of the product locally and globally.

On the medical importance of the Damascene rose, Dr. Fendi explained that the Damascene rose petals contain a volatile oil known as “rose oil” that is used in the composition of some medical preparations and perfumes. The petals and fruits also contain vitamins, including “A” and “C”, organic acids and mineral salts.

Scientific studies also indicate, according to Dr. Fendi, the possibility of using decoction of petals to treat diseases of high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, heart and liver diseases, colon infections and gastric ulcers.

Among the studies carried out by the University of Damascus on the medical importance of the Damascene rose is a study presented by Dr. Sahar Al-Naqari, a specialist in pharmacology and medicinal plants, who received her PhD. The study, according to Al-Naqri, came about the effect of the extracts of the Damascene rose against obesity by studying the inhibitory effect of the enzyme “pancreatic lipase”, which stimulates the breakdown or decomposition of the enzyme “pancreatic lipase” Fats.

The study also included the alcoholic extract, essential oil, rose water and aqueous extract, and the results showed that the alcoholic extract of the rose possesses an excellent efficacy in inhibiting the “pancreatic lipase” enzyme, and its identity was identified using several techniques, noting that a number of research and other studies confirmed the pharmacological effects of the rose, which is characterized by effectiveness. Antibacterial, antitumor, depressant, anti-oxidant and analgesic, in addition to many physiological effects such as hypnotic, anticonvulsant, and epilepsy.

Regarding the composition of the Damascene rose and its economic importance, Dr. Al-Naqari indicated that it contains an aromatic oil, ranging from 0.1 to 1 percent, and the percentage varies according to different climatic conditions and from one region to another. The price of rose oil depends on several factors, including the huge quantities of flowers that we need to extract, as the production of one kilogram of rose oil requires about 3 to 5 tons of flowers.

Dr. Al-Naqari confirmed that the flowers of the Damascene rose have been used since ancient times in folk medicine to treat both chest and abdominal pain and digestive diseases, and it was known for its strengthening effect on the heart muscle. Rose water was used as a sterilizer, eye wash and mouth cleanser, and the water extracts of dry flowers were used as a diuretic and antipyretic.
