Now there is a growing fear in Kiev that the Russian army will succeed in encircling the cities of Svrodonetsk and Lisichensk, the last two strongholds left to the Ukrainians in the Luhansk region of the Donbas region.
The Ukrainian army has retreated to lighter positions for defense and is awaiting reinforcements, in an attempt to repel the Russian attacking force.
Earlier in the day, authorities in the city of Mariupol found about 200 civilian bodies in an advanced state of decay beneath the rubble of a building in the city center.
The city of Mariupol, which fell to Russia last week, underwent a nearly three-month siege, during which the city was shelled with artillery and aerial bombardment.
Authorities estimate that nearly 20,000 civilians were killed in the fighting in the city.
