An 18-year-old man suspected of being the attacker who opened fire at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, in which at least 19 students and two teachers died, died after the attack, according to authorities.

Authorities identified him as Salvador Ramos.

Robb Elementary School, where Ramos opened fire, is located in Uvalde, a city in Uvalde County, Texas, about 136 km west of San Antonio and about 112 km east of Del Rio.

The suspect resided in this city and had attended Uvalde High School.

He shot his grandmother before he went to elementary school.

Before going armed to Robb Elementary School, Salvador Ramos is believed to have shot his grandmother, three law enforcement sources told CNN.

The suspect's grandmother was flown to San Antonio and "is still holding on," state Sen. Roland Gutierrez said, according to information he received from the Texas Rangers.

"This young man shot his grandmother and fled the scene of the incident," Gutierrez told CNN's Erin Burnett.

Earlier, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said "the subject shot his grandmother just before going to school."

The attacker acted alone

According to Abbott, the suspect arrived at the school armed with a pistol and possibly a rifle.

"He shot and killed in a horrible way," the governor told several elementary school students and a teacher.

Pete Arredondo, police chief for the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, said the shooter "acted alone during this heinous crime."

He barricaded himself in a classroom and killed all the victims, according to an official

All of the fatalities and injuries occurred inside a classroom at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, according to Lt. Chris Olivarez, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The attacker barricaded himself in a classroom, killing two teachers and 19 children, he said.

"This shows the total evil of this shooter," Olivarez told CNN's John Berman and Shimon Prokupecz.

As the deadly massacre at a Texas school unfolds, there is little sign of common ground in Washington.

As the shooting raged, officers roamed the school, smashing windows and attempting to evacuate children and staff.

They were then able to force their way into the classroom where the shooter was, he said.

Olivarez said there was no pursuit with law enforcement before the shooter crashed a car near the school.

Asked if the school was a target, Olivarez said there are still "a lot of unanswered questions."
