In his bachelor thesis, Holzkirchner student Vincent Schweighofer (22) examined the effects of the corona pandemic on medium-sized companies in Holzkirchner.

Holzkirchen – What are the economic consequences of the corona pandemic for the Holzkirchen area?

Vincent Schweighofer (22) pursued this question as part of his bachelor thesis.

The native of Holzkirchner is studying business administration at the private University of Bavarian Economics (in Munich). For his bachelor's thesis with Oliver Schlick, Professor of Economics, he surveyed companies from five sectors about slumps in sales, liquidity bottlenecks and insolvencies.

Mr. Schweighofer, how did you come up with the idea of investigating the consequences of Corona on the Holzkirchner area?

I am from Holzkirchner, grew up here and went to school.

That's why I was interested in the regional aspect.

And because I've been working at Gemeindewerke Holzkirchen GmbH since the beginning of my dual studies, I also have an insight into the municipal level.

How did the companies react to your research interest?

I had a 52 percent response rate.

That's very high.

I think that was also due to the personal approach.

With the printed questionnaire I walked through all the companies from the McDonald's roundabout to the Aral petrol station to ask whether they wanted to take part.

I have also assured them that the results will be anonymised.

Which companies participated?

A total of 143, including 11 medium-sized enterprises, 50 small enterprises and 82 micro-enterprises.

They are from the healthcare, hospitality, retail, automotive and service industries.

My employer, the Gemeindewerke Holzkirchen GmbH, was there, among others, the Priller wine shop, the Franzetti ice cream parlour, the Martin medical supply store and the Fellner car dealership.

What results did you come to?

More than 70 percent of small and micro-enterprises suffered at least a moderate drop in sales.

Medium-sized companies were significantly less affected.

55 percent of them had little or no drop in sales.

It is also interesting that there was not only a drop in sales, but also a drop in supply.

Corona is therefore not only a crisis of demand, but also a crisis of supply - and to the same extent.

Once again, small and micro-enterprises were hit much harder than medium-sized enterprises.

Were there any results that surprised you?

What really surprised me was that 79 percent of the companies surveyed were not threatened or affected by insolvency.

I expected much worse results.

Compared to Germany as a whole, Holzkirchen got off relatively mildly.

This shows that the middle class in Holzkirchen is very healthy and solid and has great economic power.

However, around three of the companies surveyed have gone bankrupt.

Which sectors were most at risk?

Gastronomy and the service industry were hit hardest by Corona.

These sectors were most at risk of insolvency.

When can an upswing be expected again?

The upswing is already happening.

If the corona situation doesn't deteriorate again, things should go uphill.
