The Palestinian Minister of Civil Affairs, Hussein a-Sheikh, has been appointed secretary general of the PLO Executive Committee.
Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has issued a decision announcing the appointment.
Last January, PA chairman Abbas convened members of the Fatah Central Committee, and in a vote, it was decided to "unanimously" promote two of Abbas' loyalists to key positions in the Palestinian leadership.
One of them is a-Sheikh, one of the people closest to Abbas and in charge of relations with Israel.
He was then elected a member of the PLO Executive Committee, a preliminary step that paved the way for the post of secretary general.
In recent years, Isheikh's status has strengthened and he has been given many powers due to his proximity to Abbas.
He regularly accompanies the PA chairman in his political meetings in the Palestinian Authority and abroad. He is also a partner in Abbas' policies and supports the path of political dialogue, and security and civilian coordination with Israel.
