(CNN Spanish) --

American actor Ray Liotta died at the age of 67 in the Dominican Republic.

Raymond Allen Liotta, who was also a producer, was world famous for his role as Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese's 1990 film

Goodfellas

, as well as the character Shoeless Joe Jackson in

Field of Dreams

.

"Ray was working on a project in the Dominican Republic called 'Dangerous Waters' when he passed away. He died in his sleep. He is survived by his daughter, Karsen, and his fiancee, Jacy Nittolo," his publicist Jennifer Allen told CNN.

Liotta was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1954. He studied acting at the University of Miami in Florida before moving to New York to pursue his dream of being an actor.

However, it wasn't until he moved to Los Angeles, after 3 1/2 years of playing a nice guy on the NBC soap opera "Another World," that he began to fulfill his acting longings.

Liotta's first major film role was as a psychotic ex-husband determined to win his partner back in "Something Wild."

This role propelled Liotta to fame and earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

From there, Liotta played mobster Henry Hill in the classic

Goodfellas

(1990), working alongside renowned actors Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.

"Provocative people stick in people's minds," Liotta said of his famous "bad guy" roles, according to Dispatch.

But to avoid being typecast as such forever, Liotta decided to break the mold with his next role as a loving father in the heartwarming film "Corrina, Corrina" (1994), co-starring Whoopi Goldberg.

Liotta soon showed that acting was not his only forte.

He formed his own production company in 2002 and made his producing debut in the movie "Narc," in which he also played a corrupt cop.

He also stole a lot of applause for his work on television.

In 2004, Liotta starred in an episode of NBC's hit drama "ER" and won an Emmy for her guest appearance.

The actor got his start on morning television, playing the character of Joey Perrini on the soap opera "Another World."
