Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) advises Germans to stock up on emergency supplies.

Ursula Fuchs from the Federal Office for Civil Protection explains how consumers make provisions for the case that hopefully never occurs.

Munich – Ursula Fuchs is head of the public information department at the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK).

She explains how to prepare yourself for disasters.

It's not just about war.

Any event that endangers the life or health of a large number of people is considered a disaster.

In the corona pandemic, for example, the Free State of Bavaria declared a disaster twice.

Ms. Fuchs, Germany is considered very safe.

What is the agency preparing for?

Ursula Fuchs: To many different crises and disasters, including natural disasters such as floods, storms or droughts.

This also includes cascading effects such as power outages.

The greatest possible catastrophe is, of course, a war - and we are responsible for civil protection.

Is it even possible to prepare for so many different scenarios?

The prevention is similar in most cases.

People need food, water, hygiene items - and most importantly information about what happened, what they should do and how long it is likely to take.

And what should one do?

We always advise a so-called living stock, in which individual goods are consumed in everyday life and replaced again.

Nothing goes to waste.

Above all, it should be things that everyone in the family likes.

Of course, special needs should also be taken into account, such as those that occur with diseases such as diabetes.

How long should private supplies last?

As a rule of thumb, we recommend a supply for ten days - based on each person.

For an adult, that's about 3.5 kilos of bread, potatoes or rice.

Important for dry goods that can only be eaten after they have been cooked: a camping stove with gas cartridges, because power outages have to be expected in many disasters.

There should also be around 2.5 kilos of canned vegetables and fruit in the house per person.

Cooking oils also have a long shelf life.

Drinking water is particularly important because a catastrophe can also paralyze this supply.

It should be two liters per day and person.

Stock up on emergency supplies: These foods are on the list

The Federal Office for Civil Protection has published a list intended to help citizens create an emergency supply for ten days.

It includes the following amounts for different foods per person:

  • Water or drinks: 20 liters (2 liters per day)

  • Cereals, pasta, bread, potatoes: 3.5 kilograms

  • Vegetables, legumes: 4.0 kilograms

  • Fruit, nuts: 2.5 kilograms

  • Milk, dairy products: 2.6 kilograms

  • Fish, meat: 1.5 kilograms

  • Fats, oils: 0.36 kilograms

  • Miscellaneous such as sweets or ready meals

Ms. Fuchs, you also mentioned hygiene products.

Ursula Fuchs: This is an important topic in order to prevent diseases.

Consider: In the event of a total grid collapse, water toilets will no longer work either.

For example, you could use a bucket or disposable bag with cat litter, for example, for human needs.

Of course, things like soap, toothpaste and disinfectants are also important.

The latter for both wounds and skin.

And a well-stocked medicine cabinet is important.

What absolutely belongs in there?

Painkillers, bandages, something for bug bites maybe.

People who are dependent on certain medications have to think ahead.

Because they are often not issued in advance.

It therefore makes sense to discuss with your doctor and pharmacist how to ensure the supply in case of doubt.

Some people hoard iodine tablets.

What's it all about?

In the event of a nuclear accident or attack, high doses of iodine can block the accumulation of radioactive particles in the body.

However, there are state reserves for this, which are spent in a targeted manner when required.

It only works in the right dose at the right time.

Otherwise, the body is more likely to be damaged.

In addition, the dose of the over-the-counter tablets is not sufficient.

We therefore advise against private storage.

They also talked about gathering information.

This is elementary in order to obtain information during a disaster and, if necessary, to make the right decisions.

Several charged power banks for the smartphone or a battery-operated radio are useful.

What if you need to leave the house quickly?

A packed backpack with the essentials should be ready for each family member.

What should not be forgotten: Not all catastrophes can be planned.

All family members may be scattered upon entry.

Therefore, it makes sense to agree on meeting points.

And the most important thing: talk about the emergency in daylight.

This gives people more security when such a case has occurred.
