Tragedy in Senegal: 11 newborn babies were killed in a fire in a maternity ward at a hospital in the city of Tibwana, located north of the capital Decker, President (President) Maki Sal announced today (Thursday).
"I have just heard, with much sorrow and difficulty, the deaths of 11 newborn babies. I express my deepest condolences to the mothers and families," the Senegalese president said.
The state health ministry has announced that it has opened an investigation into the incident and that a response plan has been prepared.
"Arrangements and assessments are being made at this time in order to reach the area for victims and families," read a statement issued by the Ministry of Health.
Local Health Minister Abdullah Diouf Sar has interrupted a visit to Geneva with the aim of reaching the scene of the disaster.
The country's regional development minister, Sheikh Bamba Diya, told local media: "This is a shocking and unacceptable incident. We must investigate what is happening in our health system where such things are possible.
