In the debate about the flight of Lambrecht's son in the government helicopter, a legal review appears to have cast doubt on its legality.

Munich/Berlin – When the son of Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) suddenly published pictures from a ministry helicopter on Instagram, this caused a lot of outrage.

It soon became known that the minister and her son had taken the helicopter together from Berlin to northern Germany, where Lambrecht was visiting the 911 Electronic Warfare Battalion in Stadum.

From there it finally went to Sylt: Lambrecht's visit to the troops probably came on the way to a short vacation with her son.

The ministry defended Lambrecht's son's flight in the helicopter as "lawful" amid harsh criticism.

According to the guidelines, the minister paid for one hundred percent of the flight.

But it seems that the matter is far from over: An internal investigation by the Defense Ministry's legal department under chief lawyer Jan Stöß rated the case as critical,

Business Insider

reported , citing ministry circles.

Lambrecht-Sohn: Lawyers doubt the legality of helicopter flights - "companion not allowed"

According to this, Lambrecht booked the helicopter as the "holder of the authority to command and command" (IBUK).

In contrast to booking as Minister of Defense, she ended up high on the priority list, but this type of booking - again unlike booking as Minister of Defense - does not allow private companions.

So far, the ministry has argued with a booking as defense minister, which would allow Lambrecht, according to the "Guidelines for the use of aircraft of the BMVg to transport people from the political and parliamentary sectors", to take her son with him.

With the IBUK booking, however, exactly this argument expires.

The minister could have taken her children or her son with her in order to improve the compatibility of family and career.

But according to the Ministry's lawyers, this argument is difficult to justify in the case of Lambrecht's adult, 21-year-old son.

It is also unclear whether the rules could really have applied to the minister.

A few weeks ago, Defense Minister Lambrecht took her son with her in the government helicopter – from there they went on vacation.

Everything legal?

Lambrecht son in the ministry heli: Union request reveals new costs - cars drove 470 kilometers

Apart from the legality of the helicopter flight, the discussion about the costs is likely to drag on.

The financial outlay is likely to have been significantly higher than the 261 euros paid by Lambrecht, because the helicopter was not only used for the journey of the minister with her son, but two vehicles including bodyguards drove empty 470 kilometers from Berlin to Ladelund, where the helicopter had landed.

According to

Business Insider

, this emerges from a parliamentary question by the CDU/CSU defense

expert Florian Hahn

.

However, the exact cost of the vehicles remains unknown.

After visiting the troops, Lambrecht drove the empty cars to Ladelund on vacation on Sylt.

The minister continues to claim that everything was legally correct and, according to her own statements, does not see herself in self-defense mode.

According to

Business Insider

, however, the ministry is now dealing with the case much more legally with caution.
