In the event of another corona wave, the Minister of Health wants to present a concept for combating the virus.

Work is also being done on the Infection Protection Act.

Berlin – With the currently comparatively low number of cases and relaxed corona rules, the pandemic only plays a small role in everyday life in Germany.

But that could change again.

For example, on Wednesday evening (May 25) in the ZDF program by moderator Markus Lanz, SPD Health Minister Karl Lauterbach spoke out in favor of not ruling out the possibility of a renewed mask requirement indoors.

Lauterbach explained that work is currently being done in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice on the Infection Protection Act, which expires on September 23: “The Infection Protection Act does not describe what is being done or what should be done, but it describes what precautionary measures and restrictions we can use , if it were necessary, ”emphasized the Minister of Health.

Corona pandemic: Infection Protection Act expires in September

The recently amended law runs until September 23.

General mask requirements for events or when shopping as well as 2G and 3G regulations have been omitted since the beginning of April.

For the time being, “basic protection” applies – for example with mask requirements in buses, trains, clinics, practices and nursing homes.

Irrespective of state requirements, however, there are also further protection rules with mask requirements in many places, for example in cultural institutions.

Because nobody knows how the corona pandemic will develop in autumn, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach advocates preparation in any case.

In autumn, however, when the number of corona cases is increasing again and hospitals could possibly reach their limits again, the question might have to be discussed as to whether, for example, wearing a mask indoors will become mandatory again".

Lauterbach believes it is "absolutely necessary" to open up this possibility.

He had already announced that he would soon present a concept for combating Corona in the fall.

The health ministers of the federal states had also asked the federal government to adapt the Infection Protection Act with a view to autumn.

Lauterbach defends vaccine strategy and oversupply: Prepared for all eventualities

Lauterbach also defended government plans to procure additional corona vaccine.

There are vaccines for three different corona lines for the fall - the Wuhan variant, a pure omicron vaccine and a combination vaccine.

"Now I'm not telling any secrets by saying: We'll have to throw away some of these vaccines later." He emphasized: "I don't know what's coming."

When a dangerous wave comes, everyone wants the best vaccine.

"That's why I prefer to be criticized for throwing it away later." (ska / dpa)
