»America is shocked.

But of course the people here in Uvalde are the most shocked.

In the small town in Texas where this horrific massacre took place.”

A small Texas town mourns the 19 children and two adults who were shot dead by a ruthless gunman on Thursday.

Roland Nelles, DER SPIEGEL

“I have to say that if you're a father yourself, then of course this is particularly hard on you.

Little children have been murdered.

It really is a terrible act.

One can only roughly imagine how the people must feel here in this place.

The relatives, the acquaintances, the people who knew each other.

So it really is absolutely horrible.«

According to Governor Abbott, the assassin had announced his act in advance on Facebook.

The 18-year-old shooter is said to have had no criminal record.

Roland Nelles, DER SPIEGEL

»Of course, no one here really wants to talk about the assassin, even though many citizens in the city knew him.

There are companions, people who went to school with him.

They kind of tell you what kind of guy he was, a loner, someone who's been acting stranger and stranger over time.

And yet no one can really explain why he ended up taking up arms and committing this terrible act.«

Now the United States is once again debating gun laws in the country.

In Texas in particular, the regulations are particularly lax.

Governor Abbott is a fanatical opponent of stricter gun laws.

Roland Nelles, DER SPIEGEL

»On my way here from San Antonio airport, I drove past three gun shops alone, and the assassin also stocked up on guns here and, right after his 18th birthday, used the law here and bought a gun , with which he finally committed his terrible deed.«

A political scandal broke out at an event hosted by Governor Abbott.

Democrat Beto O'Rourke interrupted an ongoing Republican press briefing.

"You said it wasn't foreseeable, but it was perfectly foreseeable if you decide not to do anything."

The mayor of Uvalde then verbally abused the democrat.

It is a debate that has long polarized not only politicians but also the American people.

Roland Nelles, DER SPIEGEL

“I have to say that this is very, very sad, but it also has a lot to do with the ideological trench warfare in the USA and with the deadlocked political opinions on this topic.

You're going to meet a lot of people in Texas who think it's okay to have a gun because they say it's important to have a gun to defend yourself against assassins like Uvalde.

That sounds absurd at first, but that's the way it is here: Many see it that way and are now probably stocking up on weapons all the more to protect themselves from such possible scenarios.

As paradoxical as all this may sound.«
