Methods of treating drug addicts and the dangers of using drugs badly are the most prominent themes that the participants talked about in the scientific day organized by the Anti-Narcotics Department at the Ministry of Interior on the phenomenon of addiction at Ibn Rushd Psychiatric Hospital in Damascus.
The scientific day focused on the dangers of addiction and ways of prevention and awareness, in the presence of a number of members of the National Committee for Narcotic Affairs office, doctors and students of the hospital.
Lieutenant-Colonel Hossam Azer, Director of the Office of the National Committee for Narcotics Affairs, explained that the fight against narcotics and psychotropic substances in Syria is based on the strategies of combating supply and reducing demand through awareness, treatment and rehabilitation with the aim of bringing the abuser to complete immunity.
Lt. Col. Azer stressed the need to enhance awareness according to three levels, which are primary awareness for non-users and second awareness for drug users who are not addicts.
For his part, the hospital director, Dr. Gandhi Farah, explained that the use of narcotic substances often begins in adolescence, as adolescents desire to try new things to improve their mood, in addition to their influence on peers and the family environment, in addition to a genetically inherited predisposition and belief that these substances are comfortable or harmless.
Dr. Farah pointed out that adolescent substance use disorders are treated by identifying the problem, prompt treatment, routine annual medical visits, legal interventions, punishments or family pressure, and addressing the needs of the person as a whole, not just the addiction.
Psychiatrist Dr. Youssef Faour spoke about addictive behavior disorders caused by addictive behaviors and clinically important syndromes related to the problem or interference in personal functions, noting that behavioral addiction is scientifically defined through six basic components, namely, prominent recurrence, mood changes, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms. conflict and relapse.
