Oklahoma Governor Signs Nation's Most Restrictive Anti-Abortion Legislation

2022-05-26T03:23:50.132Z

The law, even stricter than Texas's, goes into effect immediately, banning abortions almost entirely after fertilization. "This will have a disastrous effect on the inhabitants of the state," warns an expert.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed legislation on Wednesday that almost completely bans abortions after "fertilization," making it the most restrictive in the country.

The state law, which

goes into effect immediately

, allows abortions only when the woman's life is at risk or when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest that has been reported to authorities.

It is also similar to the Texas law that allows people to file civil lawsuits against anyone who assists or provides the procedure.

"I promised Oklahomans that as governor I would sign every piece of anti-abortion legislation that came across my desk, and I'm proud to keep my promise today," Stitt said in a statement.

The Republican seeks to be reelected in a second term as governor.

"From the moment life begins at conception is when we have a responsibility as human beings to do everything we can to protect the life of the baby and the life of the mother."

The Center for Reproductive Rights and Planned Parenthood have already reported that they are suing the state of Oklahoma over this new law.

Reproductive health policy expert and researcher Elizabeth Nash warned of the disaster this will spell for state residents: "This will have terrible knock-on effects,

especially for patients from Texas who have been traveling to Oklahoma in large numbers after the approval of the law

that restricts abortions to six weeks that came into force last September".

Stitt's signing comes just weeks after the leaked draft of a Supreme Court ruling written by Justice Samuel Alito indicating the high court is ready to strike down Roe v.

Wade, who legalized abortion at the federal level in 1973.

The final decision is expected to be made in late June or early July.

"We are already seeing the start of a domino effect that will spread across the southern and central United States if Roe is removed,

" Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement.
