The senior officer was involved in a failed assassination attempt on the life of an Israeli businessman in Cyprus in the fall of 2021, according to sources.
Cyprus authorities arrested an Azerbaijani citizen in connection with the plot and found a gun in his possession.
The suspect has denied the allegations and will be put on trial, according to the AP news agency.
Iran has denied involvement in the incident.
In April, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's office announced that the Mossad's force had cycled Tehran's attempts to send out teams to kill an Israeli diplomat in Turkey, an American general in Germany and the French philosopher.
The U.S. military and Iranian Foreign Ministry declined to comment.
Iran's delegation to the UN did not respond either.
