The U.S. Navy today (Thursday) stopped an Iranian-made cargo of oil aboard a ship near the Greek island of Aviya, Reuters news agency reported.
According to the report, the oil that was on board the tanker was transferred to another tanker and will be shipped to the United States as confiscated goods banned from sale.
The United States is imposing sanctions banning the purchase of oil from Iran, due to the country's nuclear program and ballistic missiles.
The oil was found on an Iranian ship called the "Pagas" that sailed with a Russian crew to an unknown destination.
The ship itself was released by the Greek authorities, due to a lack of clarity in the ownership of the ship, but the oil cargo was confiscated.
The move suggests Washington's tougher approach to Iran, presumably due to the disintegration of nuclear talks and the low expectation of progress in negotiating its country's entry into a new nuclear deal with Tehran.
