Russia and China vetoed the UN Security Council today against a US draft resolution on expanding sanctions against the DPRK.
The RIA Novosti news agency reported that the rest of the 13 countries in the council voted in favor of the draft resolution.
The draft resolution included a condemnation of the missile tests conducted by Pyongyang recently and a proposal to reduce the volumes of crude oil supplied to the DPRK under previous international resolutions, in addition to other restrictions on trade with it.
In a speech during the session, Russia's permanent representative to the Security Council Vasily Nebenzia described the expansion of sanctions against the DPRK as "not useful."
"The growing pressure of sanctions on Pyongyang is very dangerous," Nebenzia said, noting that the previous sanctions packages adopted against the DPRK had negatively affected the lives of its citizens.
