37.43 meters of wood plus 1.60 meters of rooster and 26 guild plaques add up to a weight of 6.2 tons. It took two attempts on Ascension Day to lift this into the air and bring the maypole of the Garching home club into a vertical position.

37.43 meters of wood plus 1.60 meters of rooster and 26 guild plaques add up to a weight of 6.2 tons.

It took two attempts on Ascension Day to lift this into the air and bring the maypole of the Garching home club into a vertical position.

Garching

– The maypole arrived at Garching's Maibaumplatz at 11:29 am sharp on Ascension Day.

Since April 23, the spruce has been stored in Dirnismaning, and numerous festivals have been celebrated around it with fish on a stick, Schlager party, Hoagartn, Kartl brunch and white sausage.

A few days ago he got his white and blue painting for the traditional Maypole Festival, the second in Garching.

The neighbors from the district of Hochbrück were already there on May 1st

Because the Hochbrückers have their own and set it up on May 1st.

"So we decided on Father's Day and that was the right thing to do.

We have the right white and blue sky," said local club chairman Hans Kastenmüller happily.

But after the Corona years it was great to celebrate two wonderful festivals at the same time.

Mayor Dietmar Gruchmann donated the tree

The home club marched behind the green bulldog, hundreds of citizens lined the street.

The Garching brass band greeted the entry with "My homeland", Mayor Dietmar Gruchmann (SPD), in proper style in lederhosen and stockings, accompanied his "mayor tree".

He donated the 116-year-old spruce and measured it himself with a measuring tape "to exactly 37.43 meters".

It takes two attempts and some jiggling to set it up

Including the rooster and thus almost 39 meters, the people of Garching hope to have the largest tree in the north of Munich.

It is certain that they violated an unwritten law.

Ex-City Councilor Alois Kraft knows that the maypole should never be higher than St. Catherine's Church.

Pastor Kathrin Frowein screws on her church plaque herself

It could have been the extra two meters that made putting up the maypole a real feat.

During the first lifting attempt, it was clear that the crane's jib would not be able to do it and would have to be moved for better leverage.

"Then we'll use the time to put up all the guild plaques," said Kastenmüller.

According to the motto "the woman is herself", Pastor Kathrin Frowein screwed on her church plaque herself.

"The TUM is new," said Gruchmann, "we have also engaged them for a taferl!"

First it hooks to a tree, then to a street lamp

Then at 12:26 p.m. the second attempt at lifting: the first meter went without any problems, then the tip got stuck in a tree.

"Just through and on!" shouted coordinator Herbert Hicker, and the tree straightened up inch by inch.

Another stop came after about five meters, now the Musikanten-Taferl collided with a street lamp.

According to the crane driver, it was not possible to dodge to the side, so: “Through and on!”.

Club chairman Hans Kastenmüller: "All's well that ends well and now we can celebrate!"

Two or three jerks and the maypole prevailed over the lamp.

Both intact, the plaque only minimally dented.

Ten minutes later, the brass band was allowed to play the redeeming flourish that stood in the Garching Maypole!

Choosing a smaller tree in five years' time is out of the question for both Kastenmüller and Gruchmann.

"All's well that ends well and now we can celebrate!", said the club's chairman.
