Nearly 95% of households have internet access at home

The Census and Statistics Department conducted a thematic household survey from April to July last year.

The survey found that Internet usage in Hong Kong continues to spread.

In 2021, there will be more than 2.53 million households connected to the Internet at home, accounting for 94.4% of all households, a slight increase from 93.9% in 2020.

Smartphones most commonly connected to the Internet

The households concerned may use one or more devices to connect to the Internet at home, among which smart phones are the most common, accounting for 99.9%, that is, almost all households have used smart phones to access the Internet.

Followed by personal computers, up to 80.2%.

In addition, nearly 47.4% of households have used other devices, such as smart TVs, electronic game consoles, wearable smart devices, and digital cameras, to connect to the Internet.

The survey also shows that 6 million Hong Kong people aged 10 and above own smartphones, accounting for about 92.9% of the relevant population.

Among the people who use smartphones, some people are more than just "one machine". The number of people who hold two smartphones exceeds 250,000, and the number of people who hold at least three smartphones reaches 14,000.

Seven adults have used the Internet within 12 months

The survey results also show that the percentage of people aged 10 and above who have used the Internet in the 12 months before the survey will increase from 92.4% in 2020 to 93.1% in 2021. Among them, those aged 65 and above have experienced the largest increase in Internet use. Significantly, in 2020, only about 65% of the elderly had used the Internet in the 12 months before the statistics, which will increase to 70% by 2021.

Elderly use less computer and more mobile phone

Regarding the use of personal computers, broken down by age, the proportion of seniors over the age of 65 who knew how to use personal computers reached 56.8%, an increase from 49.5% in 2020.

However, the corresponding proportion of the elderly who had used a computer in 12 months was only 38.5%, a slight decrease from 39.1% in 2021.

In addition, the penetration rate of smartphones has also continued to grow. Between 2012 and 2021, the proportion of people aged 10 and above owning a smartphone has risen from 54.0% to 92.9%.

The corresponding proportion of the elderly 65 years old and above owning a smartphone will also increase from 68.1% in 2020 to 73.0% in 2021.

At least 28,000 people aged 16 to 64 use non-smartphones

Since January last year, the Hong Kong government has required the use of the "Safe Travel" mobile app to enter government buildings, and then gradually "spicier" and expanded to restaurants and other premises. During the Census and Statistics Department's survey last year (April to July 2021), there were at least 28,000 people aged 16 to 64 who owned non-smartphones.

If the relevant person does not buy a new mobile phone after the event, they will not be able to use the "Safe Travel" or will be turned away.

As for the population aged 65 or over, nearly 260,000 people use non-smartphones.
