The art of gold

2022-05-26T05:18:52.978Z

Shaping this precious material in the colors of the sun is what man has done best since the dawn of time, with a constantly renewed and extremely popular virtuosity today.

Until now, these golden marvels were exhibited in the “treasure room” of the Cluny Museum.

But thanks to two years of work and a now chronological journey, these Celtic torques, rings and bracelets, dating from the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, now have the honor of a showcase in the middle the Frigidarium, a fascinating remnant of the Lutèce thermal baths and one of the first rooms now visited by visitors.

“These jewels display not only a magical solar brilliance, and above all an impressive technical virtuosity

, enthuses Isabelle Bardiès-Fronty, general curator of the museum.

We placed them there, under the famous Pillar of the Nautes, a monumental Gallo-Roman column discovered during excavations of the crypt of Notre-Dame de Paris, in order to show that working with gold goes back very far in the history of art and that these ancient skills influenced the goldsmithing of the Middle Ages.
