The recent shooting incident in (Robb) Elementary School in Texas, USA, has reopened the issue of gun embargo in the United States, amid a dispute between Democrats and Republicans over the right to bear arms.
"The Texas incident is not the result of insufficient laws, but because of weak enforcement of existing laws that prevent mentally ill individuals from acquiring firearms," Sky News quoted Irina Zuckerman, an American expert in security and strategic affairs, as saying.
Zuckerman noted that “there are many cities that suffer from gun violence, which are cities under the control of Democrats with the most severe restrictions on guns, such as New York and Chicago because criminals do not abide by the laws and also because the police in those states have been denied measures to make arrests, even if violent as The criminals are released quickly,” stressing that “it is an issue related to the inadequacy of law enforcement.
Last Tuesday, an 18-year-old gunman opened fire on Robb Elementary School in Texas, killing 21 people, including 19 children, in what was described as one of the worst mass massacres in US history.
The United States witnesses almost daily shootings in public places, and major cities such as New York, Chicago, Miami and San Francisco are recording a rise in the rate of crimes committed with firearms.
Small Arms Analytics and Forecasting (SAF) has estimated unit sales of firearms at nearly 20 million units for 2021, equivalent to about 6,000 firearms per 100,000 people.
