(CNN) --

A former adviser to Trump's White House general secretary, Mark Meadows, told the House committee on Jan. 6 that then-President Donald Trump had suggested to Meadows that he approved of chants of "hang up." to Mike Pence" chanted by rioters as they stormed the US Capitol, sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

Cassidy Hutchinson, the former aide, also testified that Trump complained that her then vice president was taken to safety while Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, the sources said.

Hutchinson fielded questions from the panel during three separate sessions, CNN previously reported.

She reviewed "new business" with the commission last week, though it was not clear what that statement was about.

Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich said the "partisan" commission's "vague leaks" are "just an extension of the Democratic smear campaign that has been exposed time and time again as fabricated and dishonest," adding that " Americans are tired of the Democrats' lies and charades, but sadly, it's all they have to offer."

A spokesman for the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection declined to comment on both matters, which were first reported by The New York Times.

At a rally that preceded the riots on Capitol Hill, Trump told the crowd, "Mike Pence, I hope you stand up for the good of our Constitution and the good of our country."

After Pence said he didn't think he had the authority to reject Electoral College votes, Trump tweeted that "Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving states the opportunity to to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones they were previously asked to certify. America demands the truth!"

Videos from the Capitol during the riots show a man with a megaphone, reading the tweet aloud to others in the mob.

Inside, rioters swarmed the halls, chanting, "Hang Mike Pence."
