Turkish media on Thursday quoted senior Ankara officials as saying that the new ISIS leader, Abu al-Hassan al-Kurshi, had recently been arrested in a raid on Istanbul.
A report on the OdaTV website said that intelligence and counter-terrorism units had arrested those believed by authorities to be the recently appointed leader to replace Abu Ibrahim al-Hashmi al-Qurshi following his assassination during a U.S. raid on Syria in February.
The arrest, if indeed an ISIS leader, was made after a long surveillance of his hideout.
The report on the Turkish news site has not yet been verified in official announcements from Ankara or on behalf of another authorized source, but according to sources who spoke with the site, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to announce his arrest in the coming days.
