University Heads Against Minister of Education: "Dangerous Journey" Israel today

2022-05-26T07:12:08.063Z

In a letter sent to Shasha Bitton, they sought to strengthen the president of Ben-Gurion University in the face of the storm that has been raging in recent days around the institution.

This morning (Thursday), the heads of the universities sent a letter to the Minister of Education, Yifat Shasha Bitton, in which they sought to strengthen Prof. Daniel Haimovich, President of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

They called on her to act in order to stop the "dangerous campaign of agitation under the auspices of a political debate, the whole purpose of which is to squeeze sympathy from extremists, on both sides of the barricade."

The winds in the higher education system and the political system erupted this week after Bedouin students held a rally at Ben Gurion University to mark Nakba Day and waved PLO flags. The examination we do regarding students who are complicit in incitement, violence or harm to state symbols will also examine such incidents. "

Beer Sheva Mayor Rubik Danilovich also wrote to the university president that he felt "shock and shame" in the face of "proudly hoisted Palestinian flags and songs of praise for Israel's enemies whose whole desire is to destroy them." As university president, you must have a clear statement on the matter.

"The State of Israel has only one flag," he wrote.

It should be noted that Ben-Gurion University explained at the time of the incident that they allowed the hoisting of Palestinian flags because the ruling does not forbid it: "The Israeli government has agreements with it."

An elitist and detached body

For years, the Committee of University Principals (VRA) has been considered an elitist body detached from the student body.

Last Monday, Bedouin students at Ben-Gurion University in Be'er Sheva held a rally to mark Nakba Day at the initiative of the Hadash Party. And it also drew a political storm.

A few days earlier, a similar riot had erupted at Tel Aviv University, with Arab students marking Nakba Day and waving Palestinian flags.

Clashes broke out between Arab students and students from the "If You Will" movement who demonstrated at the place with Israeli flags.

As a result, police arrested three students on suspicion of violating public order.

Earlier this month, a resident of Abu Qweider, a 21-year-old student at Ben-Gurion University, was arrested on suspicion of violating the anti-terrorism law.

Also, a few months ago it was revealed that a number of Bedouin students operated in a cell that served as a “chastity watch” towards the dress and behavior of female students from the sector.

According to the suspicion, the same students used to take pictures of the girls and threaten them with them, claiming that they would be sent to their families.
