An industrial accident occurred at the site of the new headquarters building of the Immigration Department at Tong Yin Street, Tseung Kwan O near Chi Shin Street today (26th) at about 2 pm. A workbench in the site suddenly collapsed and a 48-year-old worker was pinned down.
Firefighters and workers worked together to rescue the trapped worker, but he fell into a coma. The firefighters rushed him to Tseung Kwan O Hospital for rescue, but was later confirmed dead.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
The site involved is the construction site of the new headquarters building of the Central Immigration Department, and the main contractor is Hip Hing Engineering.
According to the information, the project includes a 17-storey main building with south and north wings, a 16-storey security building and a basement parking lot, with a total construction area of about 139,327 square meters.

Workers' Rights Association: The deceased was a welding worker
The Industrial Casualty Rights Association stated that at about 2 pm today (May 26), a serious industrial accident occurred at Chi Shin Street, Tseung Kwan O. A workbench in a government site suddenly collapsed, crushing a middle-aged male worker.
The victim was in a coma when he was rescued, and was confirmed dead after being sent to the hospital for rescue.
The scene is the site of the headquarters building of the Immigration Department. It is reported that at the time of the incident, the owner was operating a wind coal machine for cutting work, and then the entire workbench involved collapsed.
The 48-year-old deceased, surnamed Zhuang, worked as a welding worker, leaving behind his wife and two schoolchildren.
The Workers' Rights Association said it was saddened by the accident, and its staff has rushed to the hospital to contact the family members, and will provide appropriate support and assistance.
The Workers' Rights Association also pointed out that after the accident of a female worker falling from a height at the Kai Tak SOGO site on April 18, another fatal accident occurred at the site of Hip Hing Construction within just one month. The Labour Department should conduct a thorough investigation. In this accident, if someone is found to have violated the safety regulations, he must be prosecuted.
The meeting also asked the contractor to review the construction procedures, face up to the causes of frequent accidents, and do their best to ensure the safety of the workers. It also pointed out that Hip Hing Construction should explain the accident to the family of the deceased and try its best to assist in the aftermath.
