A "failure in the Honduran electrical system" left regions of that country, as well as Guatemala and El Salvador, without power this Friday, the Regional Operator of the Central American Electric Market reported in a statement ( EOR).

The fault in a transmission line caused the disconnection of a regional interconnection line, which caused the electrical systems of each country to be left "operating in isolation", according to EOR.

"El Salvador and Guatemala are in stable condition" and in Honduras "a partial blackout is reported with a loss of approximately 50% of its demand," the statement said.

In Honduras, the National Electric Power Company (ENEE) reported on Twitter that the blackout affected 80% of the country and that work was being done to gradually restore service.

In El Salvador, the head of the General Superintendence of Electricity and Telecommunications (SIGET), Manuel Aguilar, said in a message on Twitter this Friday that the failure only affected 7% of the country but that power had already been recovered in his whole.

In Guatemala, the president of the Electricity Wholesale Market Administration, Edgar Navarro, told CNN this Friday that the failure would have affected 45% of the country for approximately 35 minutes.

EOR indicated in its statement that it is working to restore the so-called Regional Electricity System (SER) and that in the next few hours it could be that "all the interconnections between the countries" are already synchronized.

This is the second incident that affects the electricity supply of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador in less than two weeks, after a blackout on May 18 left the countries without electricity for several minutes as a result of a "regional event in the Central American power grid", as reported by EOR at the time.
