The consequences of the corona pandemic and the Ukraine war have also left their mark on Peiting's largest construction project: the municipality expects additional costs of up to one and a half million euros for the new kindergarten on Jägerstraße.

The planned opening date is being adhered to.

Peiting – The drill screeches loudly, the construction site radio blares in the entrance area.

Craftsmen haul water pipes through the huge building shell on Jägerstrasse.

Ducts for electrical wiring hang from the bare brick walls.

Building materials are piled up in the large foyer.

Work is going on everywhere on Peiting's mega construction site.

But it will be a while before the new kindergarten building can be occupied.

The large-scale project, which offers space for seven groups, was originally supposed to be finished for the 2022/23 kindergarten year.

But last October, the municipality had to concede the target given, the corona crisis and the associated delivery difficulties in the construction industry had brought down the already ambitious schedule.

Right from the start of construction there were problems with the basic lines, later there was a lack of insulating material for the flat roof and finally the windows were no longer in time for winter.

Work only picked up speed again this spring.

The kindergarten should be ready by Easter 2023

At the moment everything looks as if the new move-in date of Easter 2023, which was issued in October, can be kept, market builder Fabian Kreitl was optimistic during a tour of the construction site.

A calculated buffer of one and a half months should protect against unpleasant surprises.

"Since the open all-day school, we've been a burned child," says Mayor Peter Ostenrieder.

Its opening had to be repeatedly postponed last year because the fire protection doors did not arrive on time.

But the Corona crisis didn't just mess up the schedule.

The original budget of just under seven million euros has long since been wasted due to skyrocketing prices.

The total costs are currently 8.22 million euros, says Kreitl.

However, the result of the tender for the last four trades painting, tiling, floors and cleaning is still missing.

Because rising costs are also to be expected here, the market builder assumes that "in the worst case we will end up with 8.5 million euros".

In the meantime, the war in Ukraine and the associated increase in energy prices are also having a full impact.

"In the past, if we received offers that were 30 percent higher than the cost estimate, they were canceled and put out to tender again," said the head of the town hall.

This is now not an option.

In order not to exceed the budget even more, the architects and the municipality have saved where they could in the past few months.

Due to the high price of wood, solid wood outer walls were dispensed with in favor of a cheaper wooden stand variant.

The interior walls are now brick instead of wood.

“That might even be the better option for soundproofing,” said Kreitl.

On the upper floor, where two of the seven kindergarten groups are being built, the pillars for the ceiling are now in the building, which also reduces static costs.

Nevertheless, in the end it will be up to 1.5 million euros that the community will have to shoulder all by itself.

Because the funding from the Free State of 2.8 million euros is capped.

Because additional expenses have to be shouldered elsewhere, there will probably be no avoiding borrowing in the supplementary budget that is currently being drawn up, Ostenrieder predicts.
