The gas crisis could soon have an impact on beer prices.
In the end, predicts the managing director of Erdinger Weißbräu, many brands could capitulate.
Erding
- The gas crisis, which threatens to worsen due to the Ukraine war and EU sanctions against Russia, could soon also affect the price of beer.
This is far too low anyway, as the head of sales at the Erdinger Weißbräu brewery, Josef Westermeier, told the news portal
t-online
in an interview on Thursday, May 26.
Rising gas prices hit the beer industry: there is a risk of price increases
In view of the exploding energy costs, beer should actually be much more expensive, said Westermeier.
“Theoretically, a crate of wheat beer could cost three to four euros more.
Exactly when is an open question.” Whether customers will ultimately have to dig deeper into their pockets depends on retail.

Energy prices are skyrocketing: Weißbräu's managing director gives an outlook
However, it is likely that the price increases that have been an issue in other areas for months will soon also affect the beer industry.
“Shoes, cars and so on are much more expensive these days.
Only groceries and beer cost almost the same, they are far too cheap,” said Westermeier.
Trade and customers have to understand that beer is also worth something, otherwise there will soon be a radical upheaval in the industry.
In the end, Westermeier predicts, many beer brands will not survive this.
Brewing beer consumes a lot of energy: is there a threat of wheat beer triage?
The cost of brewing beer, which requires a lot of energy, has tripled in recent years.
In the event of a gas crisis, the family company Erdinger Weißbräu would also have to weigh up which products would continue to be produced and which not.
“Draft beer would be the least at risk, it’s the least energy intensive.
To put it bluntly: We need a wheat beer triage, a prioritization of the sales channels.” So a decision would have to be made as to which customer would still get how much beer - the most loyal customers would have priority here.
